Robert Hartenstein graduated from High School in 1939 and was a machine operator.

He volunteered for the Army of the United States in Boston, Massachusetts on 17 March 1942.

He was commissioned as a Flight Officer in February 1944. His promotion to Second Lieutenant was awarded after he had arrived overseas in August 1944.
