William R. Hawkins graduated from Central High School in 1943 where he was president of his class. He attended Wittenburg College.He joined the Air Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania on 29 October 1942 and received his pilot wings on 12 March 1944.
He was married to Ruth Ryan in March 1944.
At the time of his death, his brother John was a lieutenant with the military intelligence in Europe.
