More information

James G. Newman graduated from Highland Park High School in 1941 and attended Texas A&M College for one year.

He joined the Air Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve in Dallas, Texas, on 18 October 1942.

Statement of 1st Lt Irving G. Sly, who flew in the same mission: "On 20 November 1944, I was flying No. 3 in Red flight with Lt. Newman on my wing. We were just returning from our mission when we ran into a flak area. We were at 3,000 feet over Wehrden, Germany, (5 miles East of Saarbrücken) where the flak was very intense and accurate. Suddenly, over the R.T. we heard someone yelling and I could just make out a few words. He said he was hit and was going down. The voice was high-pitched, and it sounded as if he was very excited. Looking around for Newman, I couldn't find him anywhere, and after a few seconds I saw a plane crash and explode on the banks of the Saar river. No chute was observed. The time was approximately 0930."

He is remembered at the Sparkman Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas.
