Pfc. Albert T. Pompa joined the Regular Army on 5 February 1940.He was killed instantly at the G Company command post which was in a small church.
Entering the church, he commented to the radio operator, Peter Dounis, that he had killed 16 Germans. He, then asked, "Where's the coffee?". He and 3 other soldiers went to the back corner of the church, where the coffee was. Within a few minutes, a mortar shell exploded at that back corner, killing the men.
