2nd Lt. Joseph J. Northcutt attended North Georgia College in 1941 and 1942 and was a motion picture projectionist before he enlisted.He enlisted at Fort McPherson Atlanta, Georgia on 11 June 1943 and went overseas in April 1944 after training at Fort Benning and Camp Barkley, Texas.
During the first week of the Normandy invasion, he served with a Ranger company. He was wounded in action in August 1944 and after spending three months in an Army hospital in England, rejoined his unit in November 1944.
