Pvt Joseph M. Smith was a stock clerk before he volunteered for the Army of the United States in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 28 February 1942.Pvt Smith was a veteran of the North African, Sicilian and Italian campaigns where he was wounded in action in September 1943. For this wound he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.
