Pfc Fred F. Hidlay Jr. graduated from Eastside High School and attended Ursinus College.He enlisted at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland on 18 February 1943. He received basic training at Camp Croft, South Carolina and spent nine months at the University of Maryland under the Army Specialized Training Program, studying mechanical engineering. He was transferred to the infantry on 1 April 1944 and was sent to Camp Swift, Texas. From there he was sent overseas in September 1944.
