More information

S/Sgt John F. Davoren enlisted in Boston, Massachusetts, on 20 June 1942.

On the route back over the North Sea, approximately 25 miles out off the coast of Germany, and under enemy fighter attack, the plane left formation and was seen to spin down, out of control, exploding on hitting the water and sinking immediately. Two to four parachutes were reported as seen leaving the plane, but eventually, all of the crew members were reported missing in action.

Six crew members are remembered on the Walls of the Missing at Margraten: Richard C. Miller, John J. Vail, Windell D. Neely, John F. Davoren, Stanley D. Bennett, and George E. Babich.

Four crew members are remembered on the Walls of the Missing at Cambridge: Malcolm B. MacKinnon, Eugene W. Wood, Richard M. Cavanaugh, and Alexander A. Mareck.

In the 1930's and early 40's, there was a group of Woburn young men who played on the "Shamrock Football Team / Shamrock Athletic Club". They played their last game on the day Pearl Harbor was attacked, and shortly thereafter, the team disbanded so that the young men could serve in World War II.

Seven members of that team gave their lives serving our country. It is in honor of those seven brave men that the Shamrock Memorial Elementary School was named. Those seven men, whose pictures hang in the school's front lobby, include S/Sgt John F Davoren and Sgt John T. McHugh.
