2nd Lt Alfred B. Clumpner attended collegeand was an actor. He joined the Air Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve in Seattle, Washington on 18 June 1942.Just before making a 120° turn to avoid Heligoland and enter the enemy coast, the airplane was observed to be on fire after being attacked by enemy fighters. A tail gunner of another plane saw eight men bail out.
Only one crew member survived and was taken prisoner, nine were killed.
2nd Lt Clumpner's body was recovered from the Eider River near Grüne Insle mit Eiderwatt at Gross Olversum on 11 June 1944 and first buried the next day at the cemetery of Tönnig.
