Chester C. Slaughter graduated from Mexia High School and worked as a cook.

He joined the National Guard in Mexia, Texas on 25 November 1940 and was commissioned at Fort Benning, Georgia after completing Officer Candidate School. He was stationed at Camp Wolters, where he was in command of a rifle company and at Camp Maxey, Texas.

He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for leading his platoon in a combat action near Baesweiler, Germany in november 1944. Under his leadership they fought through an open field exposed on three sides to heavy fire.

Less then a month before his death he was awarded the Silver Star Medal for heroism in combat at the sugar refinery in Ameln, Germany on 26 February 1945.
Until a few days before his death he was commanding B Company of the 115th Infantry Regiment. On 17 March 1945 he was seconded to HQ of the 9th Army.
