Sgt Viether joined him joining the unit from the 41st Replacement Battalion on 1 August 1944.

Besides Sgt Earl E. Viether five of his brothers also served. Kenneth was stationed in England in an engineer battalion, Raymond served in France, Harvey fought in the Pacific. Orville died of wounds in Italy on 24 January 1944. He is buried at the American Military Cemetery of Sicily-Rome in Nettuno, Italy.
