More information

2nd Lt Robinson initially served with the Royal Canadian Air Force

He was on detached service with the 9th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron that day.

Statement of 1st Lt Warren G. Harding, who flew in the same mission: "On 19 October 1944, I was leading Lowgear Bleu Section with 2nd Lt Frank M. Robinson flying my wing. We took off at 0700 on a weather reconnaissance mission to Brussels, Moerdijk, Grevenbroich, Liège and return to base. Cloud condition on route tended to make formation flying difficult. There was frontal activity from Moerdijk to Grevenbroich and towards Liège. We were successful in altering course to avoid large cumulus clouds until estimated five miles northwest of Grevenbroich. At this position, Lt Robinson was approximately 50 yards to my left when we entered the cloud. The density of cloud was too great for visual contact, so I did not see him again. After one minute, I called Lt Robinson by radio, instructing him to turn to a heading of 240 degrees. He did not understand the first transmission, so I repeated it and acknowledgement was received. After turning to a heading of 240 degrees, I called Lt Robinson several times with no answer. Because my navigation was strictly dead reckoning, the position when I last saw Lt Robinson is uncertain. It was within an area of 25 mile radius from Grevenbroich, because navigation from that point to base continued as computed."
