More information
1st Lt Joe L. Young was employed as a clerk at Fisher Drug store.Statement from George Dymalski, Sgt, Air Corps, Tail Gunner:
"I certify that, while on a mission to Nova Schwechat, on 16 June 1944 as we passed over the target airplane number 41-29578 seemed to keep up with the formation very well. As we made our 90 degree turn off the target it seemed to fall back. As he fell back none of the engines were feathered nor any of the engines smoking. Five minutes after passing over the flak area of the target, I saw three enemy fighters coming from 9 o´clock and circle around the rear of the Group Formation. They stayed at five o´clock for about a minute and then peeled off and dived towards the tail of plane 41-29578 and came within 200 yards of our plane but did not shoot at us. They seemed to concentrate all their fire power on airplane 578. During the time the enemy fighters made a pass at 578 and went by us, my guns went out of order after I got one burst at the first one. While I was trying to fix my gun airplane 578 passed under us losing altitude. As the plane went down toward the ground I counted eight chutes leave the airplane. I believe that the pilot and co-pilot stayed with the airplane which made a crash landing. The plane left a cloud of dust as it slid among the ground. It did not seem to be badly damaged and it did not catch on fire."
Lt Young is remembered at Resthaven Cemetery in McCamey, Upton County, Texas with a memorial marker.
