Sgt Johnson was trained in Ft. Riley Kansas, Fort Lewis, Washington, Camp White, Oregon, and Camp Maxey, Texas before being sent overseas. On 4 August 1943, he began serving with the 18th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron as a mechanic.
