S/Sgt Jefferson G. Gregory attended college before he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Georgia, on 31 December 1943.Waist Gunner Sgt Neil F. Matz:
"I knew we were hit because the shells exploded right through the middle of the airplane. It put a hole in the craft and started it on fire, and the whole right side of the plane was burning. It started to go down."
The aircraft crashed at Deigne, about 20 kilometers southeast of Liege, Belgium. Three other crew members were also killed in action There is a memorial to the four men who were killed in action at Comblain-au-Pont, Belgium.
