More information

The aircraft was believed to have suffered damage by enemy attack at 1027 hours. At 1113 hours aircraft 050 was seen to be lagging about 2 miles behind ´C´ Squadron with #2 engine blazing. Aircraft then went into a dive with probable intent to put out the fire. Aircraft soon leveled off with engine still on fire and banked into a cloud away from the formation and under control. No chutes were seen. Lt. Mc Givern bailed out of the crippled airplane and was alright when he left the ship. The bombardier was told by a German officer at a Luftwaffe prison that he landed dead and he showed him the dogtag of Lt. Mc Givern.
