Lt Sutherland was caught in a crossfire of two German tanks. At the time of his death, he served with Company G of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Previously, he had served with Company A.

He was initially buried at the civil cemetery of Bastogne. About a month after his death, his remains were transferred to the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Grand Failly, France. In October 1948, his remains were disinterred and transferred to the Luxembourg American Cemetery. He found his final resting place there in July 1949.
