Pvt Donald W. Cooey attended high school for four years and was employed at the Lincoln Electric Company before he enlisted in Cleveland, Ohio on 23 December 1943.

He died in a portable surgical evacuation, or T/O convalescent hospital to the effects of artillery shell fragments in his chest received on 23 December 1944.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Grand-Failly, France.
