S/Sgt Truman L. Van Tine was fatally wounded during an attack on the village of Poteau. Exposing himself in order to fire the .50 caliber machine gun atop the Sherman's turret, he was struck in the head while attemting to suppress enemy fire that threatened his crew and tank.
