More information

S/Sgt Warren M. Southworth enlisted in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on 11 February 1943.
He was awarded the Silver Star medal posthumously for actions on the day of his death. The citation reads: For gallantry in action against an armed enemy of the United States near Walsheim, Germany, on 22 December 1944. When a strong combat patrol fiercely assaulted his mortar section from three side, Staff Sgt Southworth grasped the tube from an 81 mm mortar and commenced firing upon the enemy at extremely close range. In the face of severe enemy fire, he continued to fire in this manner for four hours. He then attempted to wipe out an enemy machine gun, but was mortally wounded while creeping up to the position armed only with hand grenades. His gallant actions delayed and disorganized the enemy and enabled his own men to seize the offensive and repulse the attack. S/Sgt Southworth’s splendid courage and solicitude for his comrades at the cost of his own life will long be remembered by his fellow soldiers.
