More information

Frederic Barlow volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States at Westover Field, Massachusetts on 26 June 1942.

Statement of 2nd Lt Francis E. Miron, who flew in the same mission: "Lt Barlow led our flight on two successive passes at a train in a heavily defended area behind the lines. After the first pass at the train, Lt Barlow called on the radio and said we would go down again and direct our fire on an oil tank car on the same train. He had fired and was in a shallow climb up off the target when fire broke out of his left main tank. The nose of his ship went up immediately and went into a split "s" to the left at an altidude of approximately 800 feet. I last saw his ship burning on the ground and no sign that a parachute had been used."

German farmers who whitnessed the action initially buried the pilot in their fields near the crash location.

On 1 October 1989, a team of German researchers undertook the excavation of the remains of the P-38. Pieces of the plane were shared with Barlow’s widow Doris and his son David.
