More information

1st Lt Joseph J. McCarthy graduated from Lincoln High School, where he served as captain of the gym team, and attended the American Institute of Banking before his employment at First National Bank of Jersey City and Western Electric.

He joined the Army Air Corps on 7 January 1943. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in August 1943.

2nd Lt Leo A. Dennison:
"I was flying as pilot in Aircraft number 1392. We were flying on right wing of aircraft #655. We were on the bomb run when about one before bombs away, I saw the nose of ship number 655 explode, scattering in small pieces from the leading edge of the aircraft forward. That is all I saw, and no parachutes were visible to me."

Lt Col Homer T. Hill:
"My opinion is that he was instantly killed by explosion."

All three of his brothers also served in the military during the war: two in the Navy and one in the Army.
