Pfc Harold Hess was employed as a supervisor in a foundry.

He was married to Clara Doris Bergey on 1 February 1941.

He enlisted in Detroit on 16 February 1944, sent overseas in July 1944 and joined his unit from a replacement depot on 12 August 1944. He was promoted to Private First Class on 15 September 1944.
