T/Sgt Leo Scarlett attended Allegany High School and was a clerk with the American Stores Company.He joined the National Guard in Cumberland, Maryland on 3 February 1941 and was sent overseas in October 1942.
He landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was lightly wounded in action on 10 June 1944 after which he was hospitalized for six weeks in England. He was promoted to S/Sgt on 19 August and to T/Sgt on 9 October 1944.
He was killed instantly when an enemy tank fired a shell. His remains, however, were not found until in 1976 a Germany company discovered them while clearing ammunition.
He was given his final resting place, next to his mother, at the Sunset Memorial Park at Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland on 21 May 1976.
A rosette was placed next to his name at the Walls of the Missing at Margraten.
