More information
T/Sgt Donald F. Welch:On 27 July 1944, our group was on a mission to bomb the target at Budapest, Hungary. I was flying as waist gunner in ship #211 in the lead attack unit. Lt James was flying ship # 42-78409 in the same unit. In the vicinity of the I.P. I saw Lt James’s ship hit by flak in the #3 engine. Fire immediately broke out. I then saw one man come out of the camera hatch. Soon after three more men came out of the waist. The ship then exploded and three more chutes opened. I saw seven chutes in all. The ship blew up at 0932.
