1st Lt Leon R. Jackson enlisted in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on 26 March 1942.

He attended 4 years of high school and was a skilled compositor and typesetter before he enlisted.

The right engine of the aircraft was hit by flak. 1st Lt John K. Brush, S/Sgt William F. Vermillion and Sgt Barry E. McCandlish bailed out, landed safely by parachute and were captured. S/Sgt Michael R. Miyo also left the plane and landed safely, but escaped capture. 1st Lt Robert P. Mims, pilot, made an emergency landing near Eps, France. He survived the landing and was captured. 1st Lt Leon R. Jackson bailed out but his parachute didn’t open.

He was first buried at the British cemetery of St. Pol, France.
