2nd Lt Walter H. Rumsey Jr. was an electrician before he joined the Regular Army in Los Angeles, California on 6 August 1942.

While searching the area near Ladremont, eight miles north of Nancy for German tanks, his aircraft was hit when it flew into a flak barrage. Shortly afterward, he bailed out just west of the River Moselle, but his parachute was not seen to open. He crashed at 1200 hrs near Mamey, 14 miles north of Toul, France.

Lt Rumsey was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Champigneul, France.
