More information

Statement from 1st Lt Robert M. Draney:
"After releasing our bombs, aimed at a road bridge at Zieverick, my flight reassembled at an altitude of about 7,000 feet. Just as we reached this altitude in a turn to the right, I spotted a M/T, called it out and went down on it in a low level strafing pass from west to east. As I pulled up, I noticed tracers from light flak positions and took evasive action. When I reached a safe altitude, I looked back for my flight and discovered that they had become separated. Blue Three and Four called in that they were O.K. and had joined another flight. When I called Blue Two, Lt Maloney, he failed to answer. I called several more times without an answer. I looked around the area but could not find any trace of him."

2Lt Maloney was found dead with bullets through head and chest. He was initially buried at West Cemetery in Cologne on 16 February 1945.
