More information

Sgt James B. Earley was a painter in construction and maintenance. He enlisted in Los Angeles, California on 15 March 1943.

He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. The citation reads as follows: "Sgt James B. Earley, 39288861, Infantry, Company "G", 409th Infantry Regiment. For heroism in action. On 16 November 1944, in the vicinity of Saint-Die, France, when his squad was pinned down by enemy fire, Sgt Earley managed to crawl clear of the enemy fire and contact elements of his company to bring relief to his squad. Returning close to the enemy positions, he threw hand grenades into their emplacements until he was fatally wounded by an enemy grenade. As a result of his heroic actions five of the enemy were taken prisoner and four were killed. Sgt Earley's actions reflected the highest traditions of the military service."
