Pfc Bayard Dodge Jr. attended Deerfield Academy.

He enlisted in New York City, New York on 30 June 1943 and was selected for the Army Specialized Training Program. When this program was disbanded, he was transferred to the infantry.

Among the first German strong points attacked by the 411th Infantry Regiment was at Saucy-sur-Meurthe, France. Able Company was attacking across a field. German machine guns had taken a deadly toll. Eight men from Able Company lay dead on the field and others were wounded. One of those killed, was learned later, was Bayard "BD" Dodge.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously for his action that day.

He is remembered on a monument in Saulcy-sur-Meurthe, France.
