S/Sgt Frank Caraccio entered the military service in Centerville, Appanoose County, Iowa.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously. The citation cited: When some of his comrades were pinned down by enemy fire S/Sgt Frank Caraccio went to their rescue. Disregarding his own safety, he set up a machine gun and started to blast the enemy positions endancering men of his platoon. However a hitherto undisclosed enemy machine gun opened fire and fatally wounded him.

This action occurred in France on 22 November 22 1944.

The award was accepted during a memorial service at the St. Mary’s Chatholic Church by the his father and his sister Helen.

He is remembered on a monument in Saulcy-sur-Meurthe, France.
