Cpl Melvin L. Rowe graduated from Oroville High School in 1940. He was employed at the North American Aircraft Co.He joined the Army in Chico, California on 22 October 1942. He was sent overseas in February 1945.
Statement of 1st Lt C.J. Nastoupil:
"Shortly after bombs away, I observed that B-17 No. 162, that his number two engine was feathered. At about 1310 hours No. 162 called the lead A/C that he could not keep up with the formation. No. 162’s altitude was on level with the C Box. Still late No. 162 notified the lead A/C by VHF that he was going to head for an emergency field in Russia. He reported trouble with another engine and was losing altitude rapidly when I lost sight of him. The A/C was under control at all times. I saw B-17 No. 162 at 1400 hours from 25,600 feet at 48.10N / 14.50E."
Statement of 2nd Lt Richard Rapelyea:
"I believe Cpl Rowe was killed in descending. When coming down we were all shot at by German and Russian soldiers."
Cpl Rowe was the only mortal casualty. The rest of the crew survived.
