More information

Statement 1st Lt. Charles D. Cox:
"Lt. Jennings’s ship was hit, either in fuel tanks or cockpit, and plane blazed furiously, the flames broke out at the nose of the ship and swept back over the entire plane. With the ship flaming, Lt Jennings kept it in normal formation flight for a period over half a minute. Evidently, it became apparent to the crew of Lt Jennings ship that the fire could not be extinguished. He then turned out of formation, climbing to gain altitude, so that the crew could bail out. It passed over my ship and was lost to view. In my opinion, Lt Jennings showed exceptional devotion to duty, in that he kept his plane in formation even though his ship was seriously crippled. He attempted to get his load to the DZ, without regard to personal safety."

Statement from 1st Lt/ Frank J Golomi:
"Encountered solid flak bursts for the seven minutes arriving at and leaving DZ. Saw Jennings go down. Saw threes chutes leave plane. First burst of flak hit Jennings plane, approximately just after crossing river near DZ. Plane crashed before reaching town. Crashed nose down and burned at once."
