Pfc John H. Stephens Jr. enlisted at Camp Blanding, Florida on 13 March 1943.

He and his sister Leona Pearl differed two years in age and were very close. As children, they used to jump with umbrellas from the second story of the barn into hay below, pretending the umbrellas were parachutes.
