Sgt John S. Phillips graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1939, where he played with the R.O.T.C. band. He attended Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas.

He enlisted at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on 12 June 1942.

There was a midair collision with a 361st FG P-51 on a mission to Magdeburg, Germany

The aircraft crashed in Hessen, 1.5 miles north of Dalfsen, the Netherlands. One crew member was killed, 5 became prisoners of war, and 4 evaded capture.
