More information

Wallace G. Maxwell graduated from DeLand High School in 1938 and attended college.

He volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States at MacDill Field, Florida, on 18 March 1942.

The mission took place on 21 May 1944.

Statement of 2nd Lt Wayne Leathers, who flew in the same mission: "I was flying vortex blue four on Lt Maxwell's wing, on a Chattanooga mission to the Wilhelmshaven area. Due to weather, we could not definitely pinpoint our position and, when leaving the area, we accidentally crossed over a very heavily defended area at about 6,000 feet. We began taking individual evasive action and about one minute later, I heard Lt Maxwell call in that he was hit and was going to bail out. That was the last I heard or saw of Lt Maxwell."

Lt Maxwell was declared officially dead one day and one year after he was reported missing in action.
