Pvt John L. Leighty graduated from Conrad High School and was a clerk at the Pennsylvania Railroad before he enlisted in Camden, New Jersey on 18 November 1943. He was sent overseas in November 1944.He was trained to serve in the railroad battalion but was transferred to the infantry soon after he arrived in Europe.
