More information

Pfc Joseph W. Hopp enlisted in Baltimore, Maryland on 23 February 1943.
In the summer of 1941 and 1942 Joseph worked at the company "Maryland Drydock", in the port of Baltimore. Here Joseph saw many fallen soldiers come back from the fight. This made him sad and sparked his patriotism. He decided to enroll in the army. Prior to this, he followed a medical training. He studied at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. By the high number of victims in Europe, this training was deleted and Joseph was transferred to the infantry. Here he learned to fire with a flamethrower and he crossed the ocean as 'flame thrower'. Joseph arrived on 23 September 1944 in Cherbourg, France along with the Ozark Division. His Individual Deceased Personnel File indicates that he is killed in action in Kerkrade 'Germany' on 5 november 1944. According to the book "Letters to Home", he lost his life by a sniper.
