Pfc Charles P. Hillard left school in 1936 earning all but 4 credits to graduate. Under a special state program, his basic training and year in service gave him the credits required to graduate. In May, 1945, he was posthumously graduated.He enlisted at Camp Grant, Illinois on 16 January 1942. He was sent overseas in January, 1944.
In September, 1944 he was wounded in action and hospitalized in England. He returned to active duty on 1 January 1945. For this action he received his first Purple Heart.
