Pvt Clifford Pitts enlisted on 7 October 1942 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia.Together with seven of his comrades, he was executed by members of Kampfgruppe Peiper of the 1st SS Panzer Division, Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler. They were all shot in the head. A monument, right next to the hotel, commemorates them.
