Sgt Johnson was sent overseas in August 1944.

Together with seven of his comrades, he was executed by members of Kampfgruppe Peiper of the 1st SS Panzer Division, Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler. They were all shot in the head. A monument, right next to the hotel, commemorates them.
