John Gottlob entered the service in December 1941, shortly after Pearl Harbor, and received his training in Camp Polk, Louisiana, and subsequently in Rice, California, Camp Pickett, Virginia and Indianatown Gap, Pennsylvania, from where he left for England in August 1943.
John took part in the invation of Normandy on D-Day in June 1944 and was in action with the invasion forces in France and in Belgium.
