Cpl Lawrence L. Durkee enlisted in Rochester, New York on 20 November 1942. He attended Hornell High School in Hornell, New York where he was a member of the baseball team.He was wounded in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day but recovered and returned to the fighting front to be mortally wounded in Holland.
He was initially buried at Molenhoek Cemetery near Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
