1st Lt Robert M. Leety attended college. He joined the Air Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve in Wooster, Ohio on 25 November 1942.After completing a tour of more than 60 missions, Lt Leety reenlisted.
Lt Leety saw two tanks on the main road in Hinterweidenthal, Germany. After attacking these targets and pulling off, he was hit very badly in the engine by flak.
He called and said he was going to belly-land the plane, but overshot the field that he had chosen to belly-land. He slid into trees at the far end of the field. The engine caught fire immediately, and the plane burned, except for the tail section. There was no sign of life around the plane.
