Pvt Joseph C. Ellis enlisted in Newark, New Jersey on 5 August 1943.

It was reported to his family that Pvt Ellis was believed to be killed by machine gun fire, however, this was never fully verified.

His father was a veteran of World War I and served for 18 months.
