More information

Pfc William C. Walsh enlisted in Erie County, Pennsylvania on 10 October 1942.

Pfc Walsh boarded an assault boat on the west bank of the Mosel River near Kobern, Germany. At the time of the crossing troops were being harrassed by enemy machine gun fire from the east bank. The boat was heavily loaded and about mid-stream the motor of the boat was speeded up and the bow nosed into the water, causing it to sink. Enemy machine gun fire was hitting the water as the men attempted to swim ashore. After all the men had been taken ashore, William could not be accounted for. He was reported missing in action on 16 March 1945 and remained in that status until a report was received from the Commanding General, European Theater that he was killed in action on 16 March 1945 near Kobern, Germany.
