Statement from 2nd Lt William S. Shaffer, Pilot B-17G, 43-3886
Bombs were away at 1430. We were flying #2 position in the low element. At about 1431 Lt Payne, pilot of 42-102543, dropped down about two hundred feet. I started down and then decided to catch the lead element. At about the same time I noticed gasoline streaming out of Lt Farmer´s left wing. At 1432 he left his position and dropped back past my right wing. I tried to take over his position and didn´t see him after that.

2nd Lt Arnold M. Volkay was initially buried at the new cemetery of Lingen on 31 October 1944.
