1st Lt Roy A. Nielsen graduated from Kelvyn Park High School and was a clerk.He volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in Chicago, Illinois on 12 January 1942.
The plane left from an airfield near Paris but failed to arrive at his destination. It went missing over France. All four crew members were killed. The remains of 2nd Lt. Edward Fitzgerald and of the aerial engineer, T/Sgt James E. Blakeley were never found. T/Sgt Blakeley is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at the American Military Cemetery in Cambridge. The radio operator, Cpl James E. Baldwin is buried in his hometown, Viola, Richland County, Wisconsin.
