Pfc Paul F. Volland graduated from Kew Gardens High School in Long Island and attended college for two years.

He joined the Regular Army on 9 August 1939 and served in Panama. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he returned to the United States and was stationed in Brooklyn. He then volunteered for the paratroopers and was sent overseas in September 1942.

He participated in the D-Day invasion where he was wounded in action and hospitalized for three months. For this he was awarded the Purple Heart a first time.

At the time of his death, his brother Gordon was an officer cadet and paratrooper instructor at Fort Benning.
