More information

Pfc Gerald Uchytil graduated from Springfield High School and enlisted in Portland, Oregon on 9 June 1943 soon after.

He was already a veteran of the campaigns in Sicily, Italy and Southern France.

A letter received from Capt Charles Lynn Brown, the regimental chaplain, said in part: "We have no way of expressing fully what we feel. Every respect and military honor was shown your son. To relieve your mind of anxiety and for your possible consolation, we may tell you that he was fatally wounded by enemy fire near the village of Bergstein, Germany. Everything possible was done for him. He remained unconscious and did not suffer in any way. He is buried in the Allied Cemetery in Belgium where some of us have visited him. We hope that some day you may come here, too."
